A year to stretch
and strengthen
“I am so thankful for the opportunity that the City Scholar program gave me. The donors who provided this support helped to change my path and ultimately my life.”
Jahrell Spence ’18, attending Dean College
City Scholars, implemented in 2017 as part of our five-year strategic plan, is a one-year program providing a post-graduate experience at The Academy at Watkinson for deserving Hartford public high school graduates.
The Academy is a bridge year for college-bound students who are not yet college-ready. The program combines classes at Watkinson, helping students strengthen their high school transcript, with access to the University of Hartford to help students develop the confidence that college requires. City Scholars are guided through the college admissions process by Watkinson’s expert college counselors.
Watkinson has graduated ten successful City Scholars so far. Three new City Scholars are enrolled for the 2024-2025 school year thanks to both individual donors and the Watkinson Golf Classic.
