Fall Sports 2025

girls varsity soccer

Led by our skilled captains, Aria T. ‘26, Kelsey W. ‘26, Talia H. ‘26, and Hannah P. ‘27, the 2025 girls soccer season was a resounding and joyful success. The season was defined by fluid and dominating possession, intelligent attacking combination play, and an unyielding back line. The team finished the regular season with a 12-2 record, finishing ranked #2 in the final HVAL rankings. For the second year in a row, a major preseason question was, “Who will play in goal?” Paris W. ‘28 selflessly volunteered for this crucial spot and worked diligently with Coach Niy, transforming from an inexperienced volunteer to a skilled backstop for the team. We thank and celebrate our four seniors: Aria, Talia, Kelsey, Izzy B., and super-manager Sabrina R. for creating our culture of sportsmanship, fostering team unity, and leaving behind a positive legacy! Congratulations to the entire team for a fun and successful season!

FROM THE CAPTAINS
Kelsey W. '26
The girls varsity soccer team is a family, this family grows off the closeness of the team and wanting to fight for each other. For my captain's speech at the beginning of the season I said that the team was the most important part of the season for me, and that remains true. We have a way of understanding each other like no other and five years on this team hasn't changed that. We’ve had a lot of different coaches while I've been on the team but for the past two years it's been Coach Niy and Coach Haggerty and we are so lucky to have them. Thank you to everyone!

Talia H. '26
This season was truly unforgettable, and as I conclude my final year with this incredible team, I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to our coaching staff. This was an exceptional season, one of the best, and that success is a direct testament to the dedication, guidance, and effort of Coach Haggerty and Coach Niy. Thank you for making my last year on this team so meaningful and memorable.

Aria T. ‘26
Looking back at this season, what stands out to me is this team’s ability to be focused and actively improve, while still creating a fun atmosphere and becoming a unified group. Along with the support of our amazing coaches, everyone’s continuous effort and passion is what allowed the team to be so successful. I couldn’t have asked for a better team for my senior season, and I’m so grateful for all the incredible experiences I’ve had being part of Watkinson’s Girls Varsity Soccer!

Hannah P. ‘27
Thank you, to Coach Haggerty and Coach Niy, for believing in our potential and for setting a high standard. We are all so deeply appreciative of everything you both do for our program.

Talia wrapped up her stellar career with an amazing final season, confirming her status as one of the league's strongest, most respected players. Talia controlled our play from her central midfield position. Summoning her strength, skill, and competitive nature, she created numerous scoring opportunities for herself, while also getting her teammates involved in dangerous chances. As a leader, Talia provided a potent mix of intensity, kindness, and unwavering support. Although some of her upcoming post-season accolades haven’t been announced yet, as of this writing Talia has been named a WWNEPSSA All-Star for the third year in a row. Congratulations, Talia!

JV volleyball team had a very fun and great season. We went into the season with a goal to have fun and get as much playing time for everyone as possible. We had multiple close and exciting games, but didn’t end up getting a win. We are incredibly proud of the progress that was made by each individual and the team as a whole. It truly was a pleasure to work with this team and we look forward to doing it again next year! Congratulations on an awesome season!

LILY W. ’28
Lily has a couple years of experience and we really needed that consistent presence on the court this year. Right from the start of the season, Lily was a leader for the team and was always trying to help the teammates around her. She always asked questions looking to improve her game and she did her best to incorporate the feedback from her coaches. Lily always had a positive attitude at practice and really worked hard for herself and her teammates. You can tell she is passionate and dedicated to volleyball as she has shown great improvement over the past few years. Congratulations Lily on a well deserved MVP award.

MCKENZI G. '29
McKenzi came into this season with a little volleyball knowledge, but was eager to learn. She started in a learning role, but quickly earned her spot as a starter for the majority of our games. She learned how to use her height at the net which was a valuable asset for our team. Her passing came a long way as she learned to control her movements and keep the ball in play. Our team struggled with serving this year, but McKenzi provided a consistent presence at the serving line which allowed us to play volleyball. We look forward to seeing what McKenzi will do as she continues her volleyball career. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

The 2025 Volleyball season was challenging but fun. Our players were very exuberant about the season. Although the season was very challenging the young ladies played to their highest potential. We are very proud of the efforts they gave during the season, even when they were not winning they continued to put out great effort. We had lots of fun whether we played at home or away. We finished 6th in the regular season and were scheduled to play Wooster in our Quarter finals game, which we lost but not without a fight. The serving was great and most of all the players had a great time.

Being a student athlete is not an easy task and Volleyball is not an easy sport to play. It involves lots of dynamics, and being in the right position when the ball is coming at you 70 miles an hour, you have to make an ultimate decision is sometimes nerve-rocking, because you know that whatever decision you make could change the outcome of the game in seconds. We encountered some very heavy hitters this season and as far as we are concerned we stood up to the task.

Winning or losing does not always tell the true story. I know at times these players felt like they were putting their lives on the line, however they gave it their all. We are very proud of this group of players. They never gave up no matter what they were up against. We’ve watched them improve as the season progressed, and cannot express how proud we are of these ladies. They could have given up because they were not winning, but they took it in strides and showed up to practice daily.

I would like to give special mention to our seniors. First, Amanda K., our setter who I can't say enough about. Amanda took on her role as a setter without any hesitation and has improved greatly. Kesla S., our very dependable libero, strived and mastered her position in many ways, and Ja Seng Ra N. who dedicated her time and efforts and was ready to play whenever she was called on to take the court, even though she did not play in all the games I applaud her for that. I will miss you all and I know you will all be successful young ladies. For our players who will be returning next season, I look forward to seeing you. Thank you all for allowing us to be your coaches.

FROM THE CAPTAINS
Amanda K. '26
This season has meant so much to me. Being the setter and one of the captains of this team has shown me what true teamwork and determination look like. I am beyond proud of each and every one of my teammates; we faced challenges, celebrated victories, and grew stronger together. I want to thank Coach Tomlinson and Mr. G for their guidance, encouragement, and constant belief in us. Every practice, every game, and every moment reminded me how lucky I am to be part of this team and this incredible journey.

Kaela S. '26
I am so thankful I was able to be on a team with such determination and love for the sport. Towards the end volleyball has begun to peak and I can’t wait to see where we’ll go in the post season. Each of these girls has shown how mentally and physically strong she can be and I am so proud of all of us. Thank you to the coaches for showing up to practice every day and seeing the best in everyone. I am grateful and prideful to be a part of this team and the program that has given me a home for the past five years.

Desteni D. '27
As captain of the girls' Varsity Volleyball Team, I can say this season has shown how united and strong we are. Every match tested our determination, and we grew together through every challenge. I'm proud of how we pushed ourselves, supported one another, and represented our school with heart. It was a solid season, and I couldn't have asked for a group or better co-captains to share it with. Each member of the team brought energy, dedication, and spirit to every game and practice, making this season truly unforgettable. I also want to give a huge thank you to our coaches for their constant guidance, encouragement, and belief in us. Your leadership and passion for the game have helped us grow not only as players but as a team. Together, we built something special, including a legacy of resilience that will carry on. I'm so grateful to be a captain of this team, and I'm looking forward to all that we will accomplish!

KAELA S. '26
Kaela has been playing this game since the 9th grade and we could not ask for a more dedicated player. She took the time out of season to become a better player, and coaches like that effort and dedication in their players. It was evident that Kaela loved the game, her warm up sessions were like none I have ever seen. She prepared physically and mentally for both practices and games. Kaela was asked to play outside at the beginning of the season which for her height was not a position she should even be playing. However she took it in stride and was a trooper. We quickly realized that we needed her at the libero position, so she was reverted to that position. She is very businesslike and holds her teammates accountable. However, Kaela is a very kind and caring person. As one of our captains, she was always encouraging her teammates to be better players. Kaela is the one who gets in the gym and makes sure the net is set up and ready for practice or games. She is always directing the players on the court during games. Kaela even presented her coach with a possible lineup for the games, that is how focused she is when it comes to volleyball. Kaela at the service line is very dynamic, she has the ability to place her very strategic serves all over the court. Kaela has a strong personality and I know she will be using that wherever she goes. I applaud her for her respect and hope she continues to be a strong and opinionated young lady. I am wishing you all the success in life Kaela, and wherever you end up in life I wish you complete happiness and great success. Congratulations Kaela, you are very deserving of this award!

JA SENG RA N. ’26
Ja Seng Ra has been a part of Watkinson volleyball since the start of her first year. She is one of the most dedicated students and athletes you will ever meet. She is always at practice and ready to learn and improve. She is constantly paying attention and listening to what her coaches are saying, so she is ready to implement it into her game. This award stretches over all four years because the progress Ja Seng Ra has made since her freshman year has been incredible. She started without any knowledge and barely played in JV games and ended up starting multiple varsity games in her senior year. Congratulations on a wonderful volleyball career Ja Seng Ra! We truly will miss having you out there with us next season!

DESTENI D. ’27
Desteni is a born leader and I know one day we will see her in a top position somewhere. She is poised, polite, is not afraid to speak her mind, but extremely kind, all that in one package is something to be proud of. Desteni commands respect and has this smiling countenance even when she is not pleased. I know she gets upset with me at times but she is never disrespectful. As a co-captain Desteini is calm, always encouraging and motivating. She is very dependable and she is a take charge person. I heard about Desteni before I met her and when I did meet I knew what all that buzz was about. Desteni has improved in many ways as a volleyball player since the day she started as an 8th grader. She now serves like a champion, her blocks and her hitting has come a long way. Desteni is very deserving of this award in more ways than one. She will be returning as a senior next year and I know she is going to improve into a better player than she is this season. Thank you for being the young lady that you are, and I hope to see you next season.

AMANDA K. ’26
Amanda was essentially forced into the setting position in her junior year because we could not have a team without a setter. However, she took on that responsibility with a smile and an everlasting positive attitude. She worked so hard with both Sam and her coaches to learn the position, which is not an easy thing to do. The setter is definitely the hardest position on the volleyball court because they have to see the entire court all at once and know exactly where and how each of her teammates prefer their sets. Amanda did struggle with setting in the beginning, but her perseverance and resilience are the main reasons she was a perfect candidate for this award. She never gave up and always kept that positive attitude. She listened to feedback from her coaches and teammates, which at times can be very overwhelming, however she took the feedback in stride, never complained and we are truly grateful, because we made the right choice in choosing Amanda for this position which she has gracefully held for these past two years. Congratulations Amanda on a very well deserved award!

varsity cross country

Hard work, endurance, personality, and humor exemplify the 2025-2026 cross-country team. After their efforts during summer training, they began the season with a commitment to pushing their limits through increased mileage and more demanding workouts. There was no better sight than the runners supporting each other as they crossed the finish line, and watching friendships being created through a love of running and teamwork. All 10 runners achieving a PR in the last two meets is a testament to their commitment and hard work. Coach Chris and I look forward to building a team that aspires to excel, connect, and embrace a love for running and fitness.

FROM THE CAPTAINS
William H. '26
A big thank you goes to Coach Chris and Coach Roberts for an amazing season! Since late August, the runners on the team have all worked hard at building stamina and speed, leading to plenty of personal bests. Whether it was running together during long runs at practice or high-fiving at meets, this year’s group of runners was always supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone for making this a memorable senior season for me!

WILL H. ’26
Wills’s athleticism, determination, and leadership abilities as team captain were readily apparent throughout his senior cross-country season. On an individual basis, Will was consistently the first or second Watkinson finisher in every meet this fall. He also maintained his “sub-21” goal in several races, which is considered a milestone for distance runners. Will exhibited his leadership skills and maturity as he led Watkinson’s relatively young team through their daily warm-ups and guided them as they previewed race courses on meet days. More importantly, he led by example, with his consistently strong work effort and focus that he displayed every day at practice. Thank you for your contributions over the years in leading the team - you will be missed next year!

ANTONIO G. ’28
Antonio’s freshman season was cut short due to injury, but he came back this year determined, strong, and ready to compete. His race times improved steadily throughout the season, with a 6+ minute difference from his first to last race. Equally as impressive is his commitment and work ethic; he listens, observes, learns, and then pushes himself to achieve his personal goals as they relate to his own performance and that of the entire team. We look forward to watching Antonio continue to grow as an athlete throughout his high school career. Congratulations, Antonio!

Over the years, she watched and learned, improved as a runner, and will be remembered for being a positive, motivating, and fun teammate and captain. She cares and shows support for her teammates’ success as much as her own and will be the first one at the finish line to offer encouragement and congratulations. Thank you, Caroline!

BOYS VARSITY SOCCER

The boys varsity soccer team had worked hard and were the best versions of themselves this season on their way to a late-season surge that featured three wins in October, including a huge conference win against Forman here on Hupp Memorial Field during senior day to cap off Aviv ('26) and Henry's ('26) incredible careers with the Rams. Our team is young, as we started several 8th graders, and we lost six regular players to season-ending injuries. None of this held us back, as the boys had an excellent time and grew in the game. We hope the boys keep a ball at their feet throughout the offseason and come back better than ever next fall!

LIAM W. ’27
Liam is our Boys Varsity Soccer Most Valuable Player for the season. Liam was the definitive engine of our team, demonstrating unparalleled versatility by successfully playing virtually every position on the field throughout the campaign. His incredible pace and exceptional footwork allowed him to navigate the tightest spaces, often leaving defenders flat-footed. Liam's attacking prowess was reflected in his outstanding total of 23 goals, a testament to his marked improvement in simplifying his finishing attempts to maximize efficiency. Beyond the statistics, his consistently positive attitude and relentless "never-say-die" spirit inspired his teammates daily. As Liam prepares to enter his senior season, he is clearly on the verge of embracing continued and even more vital leadership responsibilities for the program.

COOPER M. ’27
The recipient of this year's Most Improved Player award for Boys Varsity Soccer is Cooper. Playing as our left back, Cooper displayed incredible strength, yet was deceptively fast for a player of his size. He embraced the critical role of the outside defender, simplifying the game by consistently winning possession and promptly sending the ball down the line to initiate our attack. His understanding of the "flat back four" improved immensely throughout the season, culminating in his vital role in executing the offside trap, which often frustrated opposing sides and neutralized their threats. Cooper's trajectory is pointed straight toward an excellent senior season, provided he dedicates his off-season to refining his first touch and enhancing his overall passing accuracy.

COACHES AWARD

AVIV T. ’26
The winner of this year's Coaches Award for Boys Varsity Soccer is Aviv. As a multi-year captain, Aviv was the unwavering moral compass of our team, consistently demonstrating an ability to always do the right thing, even when faced with adversity. He led by example, showing up for his teammates during the toughest times and possessing the courage to confront peers when a challenge was needed. Aviv went above and beyond by taking the time to coach and mentor our younger players, helping them adjust to the high speed and skill level of varsity competition. His commitment was comprehensive; he genuinely cared and made all the important, often unseen, parts of the game matter. Aviv infused moments with contagious enthusiasm, joy, and levity, giving him the unique power to elevate a regular practice into a lasting memory. There was never a moment when he failed to be the best version of himself, and for the indelible mark he has left on our school’s soccer program, we will always be profoundly grateful.

HENRY B. ’26
The winner of our coaches award is Henry, a player who epitomizes dedication. Henry worked tirelessly, putting in significant mental and physical effort to build himself into the effective player and leader our team required him to be. He was a constant source of energy, always encouraging and highly communicative during practices and games; Henry truly brought the fire and brought the noise. The pivotal moment of our season involved shifting him from the backline into a more central midfield role. This move unlocked his unbelievable vision and talent for winning balls and connecting passes in the offensive third, resulting in him ultimately leading our team in total assists. Henry's commitment and impact were immense, and all we can hope is that he continues his love of the game and finds opportunities to play in the years ahead.

VARSITY ROWING

The Riverfront Rowing Fall season came with great weather and good water. While the team was a bit smaller this fall, that didn’t stop the team from having some great energy and a smooth season. First up, our own Head of the Riverfront Regatta that brings 4000 athletes and 10,000+ spectators to Hartford each year. We have a reputation for putting on a incredible event, smooth running, safe and fair. We cannot do it alone. The entire Riverfront Community volunteers hundreds of hours before, during and after the event to help make our race the largest single date regatta in the Northeast. When the youth rowers aren’t racing, they are tasked with carrying oars off the dock of crews landing after they raced to keep the dock clear and keep boats moving. It is a long and hard job, and this year was hot with temps nearly 86 degrees! The athletes worked hard with smiles all day to help keep things moving. It did not go unnoticed. Most of the racing this year was at the end of the season in Saratoga, NY, where all our crews finished in the middle to top half in their events, racing powerhouses like Saratoga Rowing and Kent. Congratulations to everyone for a great season. We look forward to the upcoming indoor training season!

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER

FROM THE COACHES
Our young Rams finished the season 4-1-2! This was an amazing season for all of our players where we came together to take on any competitor with energy and determination to succeed. Our three amazing captains, Deven W., Cadence J., and Daniel C., led our big team of 30 in each practice and game to be the best they could be! As a team with wide ranging skill levels, it was amazing to coach a group that was committed to having fun, and playing hard. We are so proud of all of their progress, effort, and commitment throughout the season.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER — offensive

DANIEL C. '30
Daniel has been a pivotal part of our young Rams team for the last three years. As a captain this year, he has shown so much growth on the pitch and as a teammate. As an 8th grader, he is built to lead, and does so with maturity and kindness. Daniel worked hard over the last year to improve his field positioning, footwork, and accuracy. He led the young rams in assists and scored many goals for the young rams over his three year career. In any game or scrimmage we counted on Daniel to not only excel athletically, but also to lead his teammates by example and humility. Congratulations Daniel on being the Offensive Most Valuable Player!

MS SOCCER
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER — DEfensive

SAHANA A. '31
Sahana is one of the best sweepers we have ever seen on the young Rams. Throughout the season Sahana made countless stops for the team, and cleared the ball with precision and poise. After almost every game opposing coaches would approach the coaches and recount how impressive Sahana is in the backfield, and would often comment that she is the MVP of the game. Sahana is not only an excellent defensive player, but is able to set up her teammates for success as she often clears the ball to just the right spot, laying it perfectly ahead of her teammate to bring it up the field. Sahana is a star, and we are so proud of her hustle on the field, and dedication to her team. Congratulations, Sahana, on earning the Defensive Most Valuable Player!

As a player who works hard on and off the pitch, Urijah’s skills skyrocketed, and his ability to make good plays on the ball, and set his team up for success exponentially upgraded this season. Urijah not only improved on his precision and handle, but worked hard to improve his footwork and body positioning to make great plays for the young Rams. Congratulations, Urijah, on all of your improvement, and we are so excited to see all you do in the future on the pitch!

CADENCE J. ’30
As a new player on the team, Cadence started her first practice of the season a bit quiet, but throughout the week she became one of the most positive and vocal players we have had the pleasure to coach. Not only is she a great athlete, but encourages all her teammates, with humility and grace, to be the best they can be. When playing other teams, Cadence is the first to point out positives of her teammates, and to come to the bench with energy and dedication to the game. She brings her teammates together, is a selfless player, and is always there for a quick high five or kind advice to improve. Cadence, congratulations on a great season!
